Horses need shoes when work, terrain or a hoof problem wears their feet faster than they can grow, or when they need extra protection, traction or support. But not every horse needs shoes — many do perfectly well barefoot. Whether to shoe is a decision made horse by horse, based on the work it does, the ground it lives and travels on, and the condition of its feet.

Why do horses need shoes?

A horse hoof grows continuously, like a fingernail, and in the wild that growth is balanced by natural wear. Domestic horses ridden on hard or abrasive ground, or with heavy workloads, often wear the hoof faster than it grows — leading to soreness and cracks. Shoes protect the hoof from that excess wear. They can also add grip, correct or support a hoof problem, and relieve pain in certain conditions.

Reasons a horse might be shod

  • Protection. For horses worked hard or on rough, rocky or hard ground that wears feet down.
  • Traction. Special shoes or studs help grip on ice, mud or slick footing.
  • Correction and support. Therapeutic shoeing helps manage conformation issues or conditions like laminitis.
  • Comfort. Horses with thin soles or tender feet may be more comfortable shod.

Do all horses need shoes?

No. Plenty of horses live happily barefoot, especially those in light work or on soft ground, and some owners prefer a barefoot approach for hoof health. Whether shod or barefoot, though, every horse needs regular trimming. The barefoot-versus-shod decision is genuinely individual — our guide on barefoot vs. shod weighs the trade-offs.

Shod or barefoot, hoof care is constant

Either way, feet need attention every five to eight weeks — see how often horses should be shod or trimmed. A skilled farrier is one of the most important people on your horse care team; for problem feet, a hoof care specialist may be needed. Choosing the right one is covered in how to choose a farrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do horses need shoes?

Shoes protect the hoof when work or hard ground wears it faster than it grows. They can also add traction, support or correct hoof problems, and relieve pain in some conditions.

Do all horses need shoes?

No. Many horses live happily barefoot, especially those in light work or on soft ground. Whether to shoe depends on the horse workload, terrain and hoof condition.

Does shoeing a horse hurt?

No. The outer hoof wall has no nerves, so nailing on a shoe is painless when done correctly by a skilled farrier, much like trimming a fingernail.

How often does a horse need new shoes?

Shod horses are typically reset or reshod every five to eight weeks, matching the natural hoof growth cycle, whether or not they wear the same shoes.

Is it better to keep a horse barefoot or shod?

It depends on the individual horse. Barefoot suits many horses and supports hoof health; others need shoes for protection, traction or support. Your farrier can advise.
