About Our Equine Operations
Founded in August 1981 by Drs. John Peterson and Johnny Mac Smith, the practice opened its hospital at 4747 SW 60th Avenue in Ocala on July 10, 1983 and has since added surgery, medicine, sports medicine and isolation barns. More than 25 veterinarians and over 50 technicians staff six departments: ambulatory care, internal medicine, lab and pharmacy, reproduction, sports medicine and surgery. The 12-stall sports medicine barn uses digital radiography, ultrasound, nuclear scintigraphy, an Equinosis Lameness Locator and a 90-centimetre-bore CT unit that scans standing or anaesthetised horses. The Advanced Fertility Center, opened in 1999 on 100 acres in Summerfield and headed by Melissa J. Prell, DVM, MS, DACT, handles mare management, embryo transfer, assisted reproduction and stallion services. Internships have run since 1983.
