About Our Equine Operations
Great Oak’s program began more than two decades ago as Specialized Therapeutic and Recreational Riding, or STAR Riding, and has carried the Great Oak name for the past five years, serving over 800 individuals in that time from a 40-acre farm at 1123 Edgefield Highway. Lessons cost $40, cannot be billed to insurance, and run in 20-week spring, eight-week summer and 20-week fall sessions for riders aged four and up. Besides adaptive horsemanship there is a Special Olympics South Carolina Area-15 equestrian team, equine assisted learning for schools and workplaces, and Silver Saddles, a six-week course for mature women capped at three riders. Instructors are PATH International Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors; school horse Buddy was PATH International Horse of the Year in 2019.
