About Our Equine Operations
In 1972 Susan A. Young was managing a South Florida ranch of nearly 100 horses when Equine Infectious Anemia testing reached the area and roughly 30 per cent of the herd tested positive. Rather than let them be destroyed she obtained Department of Agriculture approval to move them to a separate property — the origin of the charity she incorporated in 1987, after the first site was sold to build Sawgrass Mills Mall. The Southwest Ranches herd now runs 45 to 50 equines, EIA positive and negative mixed, alongside two miniature donkeys, a hinny, six potbellied pigs, two farm pigs, six goats, two sheep and a cat. Nothing leaves: the charity states it does not give away, adopt out, buy or sell horses. Its Magical Mini Program takes six children at a time, aged 6 to 10, at $35 for a two-hour Saturday class.
