About Our Equine Operations
American Therapeutic Riding Center was founded in Sand Springs in 2007 by Kenneth and Vicki Burkett and opened its doors the following year. Recognised as a PATH International Center Member, the nonprofit runs therapeutic horseback riding year-round for participants with physical, cognitive or emotional challenges, using the horse’s movement and temperament to build strength, confidence and independence. The programme currently serves 80 to 85 participants weekly and relies on roughly 35 volunteers who contribute more than 2,500 hours annually. Its work has drawn support from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which awarded a grant toward quality-of-life programming. Based on North 177th West Avenue, the centre describes its focus as helping riders across north-eastern Oklahoma set and reach personal goals.
