About Our Equine Operations
Colorado State University established the Equine Reproduction Laboratory in 1967 on its Foothills Campus in Fort Collins, and the facility has since developed techniques including semen freezing and cooling, embryo transfer and intracytoplasmic sperm injection that remain in industry use. Located on Rampart Road, it provides mare services, stallion breeding soundness exams and semen collection, embryo transfer and other assisted reproduction, and clinical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for horse owners nationwide. Dr. Patrick McCue and Dr. Jenny L. Sones lead clinical and educational work supported by professional staff and graduate students. The laboratory assists roughly 65 pregnant mares each foaling season, running January through June, while training veterinary students and interns in theriogenology and foaling management. It also maintains an on-site stallion roster and holds an annual stallion auction benefiting equine research.
