About Our Equine Operations
Two members of the United States Equestrian Team, Jim and David Powers, opened this Washington Street shop in 1975 — the first of what became a national retailer, and the one it still describes as its flagship. Chesley Chmura runs it. Her published account has her on a horse from the age of five, showing in equitation, hunters, jumpers and eventing, then working with regional 4-H horse programmes before joining the company, where she spent years as customer service manager ahead of taking over the store. Fitting rather than browsing is the draw: saddles are fitted on the premises, and eventing vests, helmets, boots and chaps are measured to the rider. It is the company’s only branch in Massachusetts, a short way west of Boston.
